LAAAGS Sponsors October 8, 2005 Family History
Workshop
The Lansing Area African American Genealogy Society (pictured above) sponsored a Genealogical Seminar on Saturday, October 8, 2005,  during Family History Month 2005 at the Michigan Library and Historical Center, 717 West Allegan Street, Lansing, Michigan.  The workshop was conducted from 9:00 a.m. to Noon.

LAAAGS wishes to thank everyone who  participated in the 2005 seminar.  The event was proclaimed a glowing success by all in attendance.  The workshop was well attended.  Most participants were from the Greater Lansing Area, however individuals from surrounding areas such as Grand Rapids and Detroit were also counted in those enjoying and learning from the day's events.
The workshop began with registration and check-in in the Rotunda Area of the Library.

The Keynote Speaker for the occasion was Mr. Michael Smith, Director of the Walter P. Reuther Library of Labor and Urban Affairs at the College of Urban, Labor and Metropolitan Affairs, Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan.  Mr. Smith's presentation centered around oral history.  He stressed the importance of starting with collecting oral histories before beginning your family research.

There were four break-out sessions during the seminar:
1.  Computer Aided Organization - led by LAAAGS member Arthur Glasscoe
2.  "Getting Beyond Myself" -- An Introduction to African American Genealogy - led by LAAAGS member Melvin Holley
3.  Techniques for Advanced African American Genealogy Research - led by Randy Riley, Library of Michigan
4.  Exploring Oral History as part of African American Genealogy

Tours of the Library were scheduled for the afternoon.  The tours were graciously led by Library of Michigan staff.

LAAAGS is very pleased by the community response to this workshop.  This was an exciting undertaking for LAAAGS.  It marked the organization’s third annual public event.
